The three-day tournament, held from 15th – 17th May, 2026 at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium, features participation from 11 ECOWAS Member States, highlighting the growing prominence of traditional wrestling across West Africa.

This year’s tournament promises thrilling displays of strength, skill, and cultural pride, while reinforcing the shared heritage and solidarity among ECOWAS nations.

A key highlight of TOLAC 14 is its strong emphasis on integrity and fair play. Comprehensive anti-doping measures have been introduced, with testing conducted before, during, and immediately after the competition.

Athletes who test positive will face immediate disqualification. Post-event testing will also be carried out, with results expected within three weeks. Sanctions for doping violations include a four-year suspension, forfeiture of prize money, and the return of medals.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Gambian National Sports Council, Mr. Matarr Saine, called for sportsmanship and unity, emphasizing the role of sports as a powerful tool for promoting peace, mutual understanding, and cooperation among nations.

He noted that such events create opportunities for youth, strengthen cultural ties, and advance the vision of an integrated and prosperous ECOWAS community.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, the ECOWAS Resident Representative to The Gambia, H.E. Ambassador Miatta Lily French, highlighted significant progress in the modernization and expansion of African wrestling.

She underscored the historic introduction of women’s competitions in previous editions, noting the increasing and remarkable participation of women in the sport.

She further reiterated ECOWAS’ ambition to elevate African wrestling to greater international recognition by strengthening national federations, enhancing technical expertise, professionalizing competitions, and promoting local talent on the global stage.

Officially declaring the tournament open, the Gambian Minister of Youth and Sports, Honorable Bakary Y. Badjie, described the event as more than just a competition.

He emphasized its role as a platform for fostering friendship among peoples, promoting cultural exchange, empowering youth, and reinforcing peace and solidarity across the region.
